Right Time, Right Place

25 Mar

Sometimes I find if you try to force things to happen, they usually don’t go the way you want them to.

I love it when things come together naturally, organically without much force. Not to say that you shouldn’t work hard to get results, but you have to know when to stop pushing and when to push through.

I think I am pushing too hard. It is good to recognize these times.

What’s in A Name?

8 Mar

So crunch time has come for me to make some very important decisions for the Kinetic Elements’ show that is going to be in the Toronto Fringe Festival. One of the first things that I need to decide on is the title of the show. How hard can it be?

Difficult

I started to place too much importance on this little detail. I started worrying and placing a lot of weight on this one decision. Then my friend posted this quote today:

“Be careful what you water your dreams with. Water them with worry and fear and you will produce weeds that choke the life from your dream. Water them with optimism and solutions and you will cultivate success. Always be on the lookout for ways to turn a problem into an opportunity for success. Always be on the lookout…… for ways to nurture your dream.” ~ Laozi

So then I realized I don’t have to choke the dream by worrying about what I am going to call it, I just have to give it a name. That’s it. This was the wake up call I needed!

No big deal

Taking Chances

4 Mar

Antevasin-Launch Party 2010

When I was about 5 or so my family and I were on vacation at our favourite summer resort. They were having something called a lip sync competition I didn’t know what that was, but my cousin explained what lip syncing and I was SO excited. I picked out the music “Celebration” by Kool and the Gang. I practiced for days! I can still do parts of the routine today. Then came time to “audition” the piece, they called my name to come up and show them the dance I worked so hard on….I got stage fright. I got scared and I couldn’t show them the dance.

I learned a valuable lesson that day. Never have I ever been so sorry about something in my whole life. I will always remember that day and how I did not dance.

New situations and opportunities can be intimidating. All it takes is a little risk and a little courage to take that important first step. This applies to all areas of your life; new relationships, trying some new food, getting out there and picking up a new hobby. It is the unknown that scares us, but if when just take that chance you will be so happy you did.

Trust me I have never been sorry because I tried something new, even if I found out I didn’t like it or in the end it didn’t work out. It was the times that I didn’t take that chance, that I usually regret.

Is there something you want to try? Go for it! No matter the outcome at least you’ll know you tried.

Great Minds….

Kinetic Elements Dinner

6 heads are better than 1

Surround yourself with people who are like-minded and your work will grow. Kinetic Elements is all about positivity and working together to reach a common goal. We held our launch party this last weekend and no man is an island. Our friends, family, past members of Kinetic Elements came out and we had a fantastic time.

What people had to say:

“Beautiful Choreography”

“Now I want to take classes from you!”

“I had a great time at the party. The dancers did a fantastic job. Congratulations to all of you in the dance company”

If you speak and act from your heart, people really can relate to what you do because it is authentic and beautiful. It is amazing what teamwork can do.

To Solo or Not To Solo….

15 Feb

In the last couple of months myself and the fabulous dancers of Kinetic Elements have been working on some new work. We just put together a group number that I can’t wait to show it as a workshop piece at our launch party. It’s fast, high energy and I love it. The music of course is the spine to most of the pieces that Kinetic Elements performs. It is composed by my long time friend Erik Raymond. For more you can visit www.kineticelementsdance.com

For awhile I have had this idea of choreographing a solo for me… not uncommon for choreographers, but this one would have a little twist.

MAGIC!

I know not uncommon for me either one would think, but I have always been involved with the grand illusion side of magic. I have never really tried close up magic… so I have started my quest for knowledge and materials today to start my goal in motion. I will look to my magic friends for help and some have already gave me quite a bit of information. I have been “testing the waters” for too long, it’s time for me to dive in and swim.

I will let you know how it goes….

In the meantime, check out a demo of my work so far!

Creation

29 Jan

So it’s a new year and rehearsals have begun and are in full swing!

In the past I have always approached my choreography very scientifically. There has always been a strict process in my mind and the rules only set by me. And what for?

So in the past year since I have returned home , it has been full throttle ahead. I decided to take another approach to creating choreography. I wanted to have more of a free form, be less strict about how I go about creation. Let things come a little more organically, let myself make mistakes. Sometimes, I would come into the studio and have shapes and sets of movements that I wanted to put on dancers, but no transitions, no set counts. At times I would let the dancer improv and then I would weave what I saw with what was in my imagination.

I took workshops on choreography, different styles of dance. I wanted to be a sponge and take a look from a different angle.

These days I have branched into a dance style that is totally foreign to me and fusing it with contemporary dance has been an exciting experience. We are having a lot of fun in the studio and I can’t wait to show at the end of February!

Where does your inspiration come for your art?
